Dr. J. Lawrence Cuthill - Senior Pastor

Dr. Cuthill was born in Florence, Alabama. He has lived most of his life in the Southeast with the exception of a brief stint in California. After finishing high school in Orlando, Florida, he enrolled at the University of Florida where he majored in Psychology. Following graduation from the University of Florida in 1969, he immediately enrolled in Columbia Theological Seminary having heard the call of the Lord to the ministry during his senior year in college.

During his three years at Columbia Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, he became involved in inner-city ministry in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon graduating with his master of Divinity in 1972, he accepted the call of the Georgia Avenue Presbyterian Church in inner-city Atlanta and served that church for six and a half years. Since then he has served churches in Daytona Beach, Florida; Bremen, Georgia; West Point, Georgia; Gulf Breeze, Florida.  In 1980, he retuned to Columbia Theological Seminary where he received the Doctor of Ministry Degree in 1984. For the past 15 years, he has been the senior Pastor of Winter Park Presbyterian Church, Winter Park, Florida.

It was during his ministry in Atlanta that Dr. Cuthill heard the concepts of Parish Nursing from its founder, the late Rev. Granger Westburg. The concepts of whole person health and its application in a congregational model were introduced at time. When the Winter Park Memorial Hospital and the Florida Hospital Parish Nurse Institute inquired regarding congregations willing to participate in a Parish Nurse Project in Winter Park, Dr. Cuthill was ready. He has been a faith leader and one of the strong clergy supporters of Parish Nursing and Health Ministry.

Dr. Cuthill’s love for mission and ministry extends back to his days in Atlanta where he once owned a farm that was used to introduce inner city children and adults to alternative rural living. He now serves on the Global Missions Committee of Central Florida Presbytery and is chair of the Hands on Mission Committee. For the past 25 years, he has conducted short-term mission groups for projects in Central and South America.

There are missions right here at home, and Dr. Cuthill has served as an active member on the Interfaith Council of Church for Health and Wholeness.
